Witch Hunt (MAMM 2006)

The project is dedicated to the problem of xenophobia in Moscow.
In the 2000s in Moscow, Russia, every policeman paid huge attention to “persons of Caucasian nationality”.
When a series of terrorist attacks committed by women from the Caucasus took place, the police began to stop absolutely everyone who looked like residents of the southern republics of the CIS, xenophobia became a part of national rhetoric, and the fight against terrorism made hatred legal.
My wife is from Dagestan (North Caucasus), and during this difficult period, she commuted around Moscow by public transport and constantly faced everyday xenophobia, police racketeering, and general paranoia.
In this series, I hung photocopies of my wife’s photographs in police stations, bulletin boards, train stations, and other places where Identikit pictures of wanted terrorists were hung.
